The Classical Fake Book: Over 600 Classical Themes and Melodies in Their Original Keys [Plastic Comb] Review

The Classical Fake Book: Over 600 Classical Themes and Melodies in Their Original Keys [Plastic Comb]This book is very comprehensive, and contains most of the major works of classical music.Since it is a fake book, it does not contain the complete score, but only the melody line with chords marked above the notes. The words/lyrics are included for the vocals, and double-stops where it appears in the original. Also, unlike some other fake books, the compositions appear in their original key.It is both an excellent reference to music appreciation students, concert goers and instrumental students as well as a source of material for beginning music students. Many of the themes can be used in student recitals.
The book is plastic tabbed bound, but since it is over 600 pages long it is somewhat difficult to get the pages placed flatly. It also does not feel like it would be that durable because both the plastic tabs may break, or the slots on the pages would easily be torn. The size of the notes is also smaller than most music books. But for the price paid, this book gives good value as there are over 850 classical themes and melodies in one place.

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (Play It Like It Is) [Paperback] Review

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky [Paperback]QUICK REVIEW:I'm surprised nobody's written a review for this GREAT songbook yet.I noticed in many reviews for Wilco's previous songbook Wilco Songbook, that customers were disappointed that the book contained no guitar tabs, just music notes. With Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (Play It Like It Is), which features every single song on their 2007 album Sky Blue Sky--and only those twelve songs (check Wiki for track listing)-- we are given guitar tablature for EVERY GUITAR PART in each song, from Tweedy's background finger-picking to Nels Cline's lead jazz phrasings and difficult solos, and everything in between. The best part of this is that the tabs are actually approved by Wilco! As they should be--they're perfectly accurate.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:In case you want to know EXACTLY what you're getting here... After a table of contents, it opens with a page-long description of the band's new line-up for Sky Blue Sky and obvious details about the conception of the album.Pretty superfluous stuff, but it features a lot of quotes from Tweedy himself on the band's new direction with their added players.Knowledgeable fans will likely gain nothing here. Then it gets right into the tabs. The songs are laid out in traditional musical notation with sheet music under the lyrics to each song (so you can easily follow along).Under each line is a corresponding six-line staff with the tabs we're all familiar with. These are VERY, VERY accurate. They include subtle pinch harmonics, proper slides, hammer-ons, palm mutes, tremolo picking, vibrato, bends-- literally EVERYTHING as heard on the album. And again, they do this for every guitar part, which is sometimes three simultaneously. Finally, the last page features a detailed guitar tablature notation legend with helpful pictures for those who aren't sure how to execute all those techniques I just mentioned above.

FINAL NOTE:If you play guitar and are familiar with the songs on this album, Wilco's first with Nels Cline, then you know how valuable this book is.Nowhere on the web can one find the proper tabs for the solos of many of these songs-especially Either Way, Impossible Germany, and above all Side With the Seeds.Even more surprising is the harmonizing of the other guitar parts, which I hardly noticed before playing them here- they are accurate too, and often beautiful sounding.Simply put, what you will find in this songbook is perfectly accurate tabs, and if mastered, it could be used to reproduce all guitar parts on the album accurately.

I Believe in Music: Hardcover (Book) [Hardcover] Review

I Believe in Music: Hardcover [Hardcover]This is a well written history of the Roland company that gives you a unique viewpoint into the commercial development of electronic musical instruments in the late 20th century. I was surprised to find that a large portion of the book is devoted to offering guidance for those in the music business. It looks like great advice, and it comes from an extremely succesful man, but I skipped a good 100 pages devoted to business structure, management, marketing, etc. that isn't really my focus.

John Thomas: Trumpet Secrets Revealed Review

John Thomas: Trumpet Secrets RevealedJohn Thomas, in a sweet e-mail exchange urged me, a "comeback" trumpet player who was having some issues with my progress, to buy his DVD. Well, my first thought was, "Of course he'll make a dime off of this," and then thought, "hey, this is far cheaper than a lesson." TSR was worth every dime and then some.

Mr. Thomas, a lead trumpet man of some repute (Basie, USC professorship) compiled a well thought out video that answers all questions regarding playing this special instrument, one of the most physical things one can do in music. He's the son of another great musician, Don Thomas who served as an early inspiration for John after gravitating to trumpet post drummer boy. What's beautiful about this presentation is how Mr. Thomas relates to his students in a personal, self-effacing manner and tosses ego out the door-- HE has had the stage fright, HE has had problems with confidence and range and his equipment, but becomes abundantly clear, through demonstration and his interviews with some of the greats (Snooky Young, Ingrid Jensen, Wayne Bergeron) that this man not only knows his stuff but is as interested in advancing the art and skill of trumpet playing as he is in performing himself. It's a brilliant, accessible presentation.

The Listener's Companion: Great Composers and Their Works (Omnibus Press) [Paperback] Review

The Listener's Companion: Great Composers and Their Works [Paperback]Sometimes when a great composer or writer dies his followers and heirs bring out some of his unfinished or lesser works. Such is the case here. Slonimsky, whose 'Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians' and 'Music since 1900' should be on every musiclover's shelves, was a musical polymath who spent most of his career as a musicologist and writer on music. When he died at over 100 years of age in 1995 his manuscripts were given to the Library of Congress where they remain more or less uncatalogued. His daughter, Electra Slonimsky Yourke, with some others, went through boxes and boxes of his things in order to rescue and bring to light some of his occasional writings about composers and their works. She assembled this collection under the title 'The Listener's Companion' and it was published in 2002. She says in her foreword that there were often several essays bearing on the same composer or work because Slonimsky, among other things, wrote program notes for orchestras, liner notes for recordings and so on. Consequently some of the pieces presented here are actually cobbled together from several articles. Hence one of the problems with the book. There are numbers of repetitions, often within the same article. For instance, here are two sentences from the article on Sergei Prokofiev: 'Prokofiev decided to play his own [first] piano concerto for the commencement exercises at the conservatory,' and, three paragraphs later, 'In 1914, he played his First Piano Concerto as a graduation piece at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.' [Slonimsky, a compulsive editor and fact-checker, would be horrified.] This carelessness is mildly irritating but it does not detract too severely from what is otherwise typically interesting Slonimskian prose. I've collected much of what he wrote not only for the information contained but also for the sheer joy of his style. There was, concealed behind his scholarly façade, an imp of equal importance, and that makes reading him a constant delight; one never knows what will pop up and make one chuckle. Another aspect of his style was the use of unusual words--he had a incomparable command of English although it was not his first language. Where else would you, in an otherwise straightforward passage about the second movement of Ravel's G Major Piano Concerto, encounter 'the gemmation of the austere melody and its florification are remarkable'? I don't know about you, but that tickles me; Slonimsky is playing with language the way a kitten plays with a ball of yarn. As Ms Yourke suggests in her foreword, it pays to read Slonimsky with a dictionary at hand.

The book is organized by composer, in chronological order thus: Bach - Handel - Haydn - Mozart - Beethoven - Mendelssohn - Wagner - Brahms - Tchaikovsky - Rimsky-Korsakov - Mahler - Debussy - R. Strauss - Schoenberg - Ravel - Bartók - Stravinsky - Prokofiev - Shostakovich. There is an introductory essay about each composer and then individual essays about some of their works. As you can see, the book is not all-inclusive and, indeed, under each composer there are major omissions. For instance, Beethoven's 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th symphonies do not rate an entry. One reason for this, of course, is the source of the essays--an uncatalogued hodgepodge of writings written for specific occasions. Still, one gets a good sense of the style of each composer, some real insights into the pieces under scrutiny, and lots of gossipy tales about all of them. Slonimsky was nothing if not a good storyteller.

So, this is not one of Slonimsky's major works, and it is not even a necessary work, as these things go, but it is at least generally fascinating and revealing, the sort of book to dip into as the need or desire arises. I've spent many enjoyable moments with it and expect that will continue.
