Disney At the Piano (Piano Solo Songbook) [Paperback] Review

Absolutely beautiful arrangements of disney songs! This is not the typical piano-voice-guitar tab book, so if you're looking for something with lyrics and something that is easy don't buy it. If you're looking for a book of elaborate (but not impossible) piano solos, like I was, of your favorite disney songs, this is the book you want. I picked up the piano again after a very long break. It took awhile to learn the songs, but with hard work they are worth the effort!

The Future of the Music Business: Music Pro Guides (Hal Leonard Music Pro Guides) [Paperback] Review

After reading these reviews and taking Anna Lee's very sage advice to try it via the library first, now I understand.It looks as if Mr. Gordon had several of his friends jump in and write reviews to get Ms. Lee's unfavorable review off the front page.Being the suspicious type, I checked out these reviewers, and they have all written only one review each, all giving Mr. Gordon five stars for his book, all within days of each other.

But no matter.Typical lawyer tactics don't impress me and neither did this typical lawyer's book.Having spent most of my adult life in the music industry in NYC and elsewhere, I have experienced just about everything in this business, and I am only sorry that Ms. Lee and so many others had to listen in person to this gentleman's spiel, as that's what The Future of the Music Business turns out to be: a spiel.

Yes, he has the requisite case studies with "indie" artists giving it a go on their own as an attempt to add cred to his manuscript, but Mr. Gordon (or perhaps his ghostwriter) knows nothing about digital technologies, that is apparent, nor does he offer his readers any new solutions.He is very much from the old school where the only game in town was the nearest major label that pulled all the purse strings.Now that the Internet has obliterated that, formerly holier-than-thou industry types are finding themselves at a real loss as for how to deal with it, and we see plenty of old dogs with half-a$$ed new tricks to push on the public.

The only advice I have for those in this new music industry, and it's free:Carve your own niche instead of trying to fit the ones sculpted by the suits.In these strange times where Kelly Clarkson, et. al., are unbelievably considered punk rock, we are definitely due for some big changes.The markets are changing with the emergence of India and China, not to mention a European Union with over 450 million people.Add the Internet to this mix and you have the opportunity for many niche markets to evolve without the current major label system as a constituent.The Internet is integrating into and changing the very nature of TV and radio as we know them, and amen to that.

Mr. Gordon deserves credit for one thing and one thing only: his book is no better or no worse than anything else out there.

Music Theory: A Practical Guide for All Musicians (Music Instruction) [Paperback] Review

Barrett's practical and accessible books show how good he is as an instructor. I own his books on Music Theory and Guitar Fretboard and these are THE BEST that I have seen on music instruction... period.Difficult concepts are broken down into small steps and driven down using the workbook approach (i.e. written practice) with the answer key included. When I look for new stuff I check first to see if Barrett has written about it. I've also found books by Mark John Sternal to be very good.

I hope Barrett (and his publisher) continues to produce more advanced music instruction material, and arranges his books into a "recommended" program. The workbook format works great and can be complemented by cds, dvds, web instruction, computer music software (sonar, cubase?) etc.

I bought this book after seeing the show, and decided to use some songs in auditions. This book is very good because they give you most of the songs from the musical. Most of the songs are in there but not all of thereprises are there. The confusing part of the book is the fact that theydon't give the names of the characters singing the songs.Clear and easyto read music adds to the benefits of this book! I really liked this arrangement-very fun and upbeat. It is difficult, but has no insane rhythms/stretches, etc. A medium to advanced player will have a good time, but it is not for a beginner. Trust me, don't ruin your favorite music/love of piano by starting out on these harder books.

This book completely changed my understanding and level of jazz piano playing.It is short and to the point, yet carefully written and complete.I like the fact that the author is a trained engineer.As a computerprogrammer I can identify with the way the book is layed out very logicallywith the assumption that the reader is intelligent, interested,andmotivated.I read the entire book while on trains going to and from work. I think it would have been a distraction to have read it while at a piano. The chord pattern excercises at the end of the book are excellent; I ammethododically going through all of them using a PC based sequencerconnected via midi to an electronic keyboard.If you only buy one bookon jazz piano, I think it should be this one. The next book to readafter this one, in my opinion is "All about Chords".I am almostfinished reading it;I could never have handled it if I hadn't read"Modern Jazz Piano" first. The two books together aremagnificently complete. I have a quite a library of jazz piano and jazzbooks; most of them are padded and not of much use."Modern JazzPiano" is by contrast a classic that every jazz pianist should have.I lost many years because I was brain-washed into believing the JohnMehegan jazz system as taught at Julliard was the only way to learn jazz. Inow believe the Julliard system is hopelessly complicated and noteffective.The traditional harmony systems used in "Modern JazzPiano" are the best and also the most popular.It is not somethingesoteric that only propeller heads know about. Buy it and hold onto it. Even if it sits on your bookshelf for years, there will come a day when itwill speak eloquently to you and change your level of playing andunderstanding.

I've had this edition for about 15 years, and physically it's held up very well.No tearing, binding is still strong, pages are as white as the day I got it.

This is a generous sampling of Debussy's piano music.Some pieces, like L'isle Joyeuse, are not easy listening, though none are as experimental as Debussy became later in life.That said, many pieces, notably the Arabesques and Suite Bergmasque, are pretty and accessible.

Difficulty ranges from moderate (Reverie, Claire De Lune) to virtuosic (Reflets dans l'eau, Mouvement)

The major downside for the pianist is that there are no fingerings at all.

William Joseph - Within (Piano Solo Personality) [Paperback] Review

I purchased this book because I own the CD and absolutely loved the music.Because the original music is mostly played on the piano to begin with, the sheet music sounds very similar to what you hear on the CD.Some of the songs are VERY difficult to play, and so I would only recommend this book to serious pianists who don't mind practicing A LOT to get the notes and the speed.It's wonderful, overall.It will give you hours of beautiful music for any occasion.Even the "easier" songs (which really aren't that easy) sound very impressive when played.

Cello Solos EFS 40 [Paperback] Review

I am an adult intermediate level cello student (appr. early HS equivalent).I bought this book for fun, and now my teacher assigns me a piece each week to work on.It is refreshing to actually work on lyrical solo pieces to take a break from the scales and etudes.

Although these seem like a break from the etudes, you still have lots of building and learning material here.They make shifting exercises fun for example.

Plus, it comes with a full piano accompaniement that is so useful for students to play with to check intonation.

My teacher also uses the book to play along on the cello for accompaniement for the same purpose (works really well for the Handel Largo since the bass line in the piano score functions as continuo part for a second cello).Great tunes from opera, symphony, etc.This is a fun book to play from.

One downside is the suggested fingerings.While most make sense, some are sort of silly in the goal to avoid the dreaded random open string.My teacher changes the fingerings when she assigns me a new piece.However, anyone on a level to play these pieces will recognize there are alternative fingerings and can adapt to their own use.

'80s and '90s Rock (Paperback Songs) [Paperback] Review

This book has many popular songs written in a lot of easy chords, but it's up to the player to figure out how it is played which can be tricky sometimes.I think the book should have been made a bit bigger.I kept having to stop to turn the page whereas if it was larger that the whole song would have fit in a double page spread.

Coldplay - Parachutes (Pvg) [Paperback] Review

I look forward to going home every night (and probably much to my neighbors' and roommate's dismay) to try to play and sing at the same time. The music is for the piano to accompany the rest of the band, so it doesn't always carry the melody.But it's awesome and not too bad.The abundance of sharps and flats may scare some, such as me, but in the end the chords are not too difficult; there is a lot of repetition.This is my favorite album of Coldplay, so I am particularly fond of many of the songs.I hope this helps!

In the Heights-Piano/Vocal Selections (Songbook) [Paperback] Review

A surprising number of songs are included here. The piano/vocal arrangements are fantastic, and very little is cut from the original show - even choral parts are kept the same, mostly. The only major exception is a slightly abridged version of the title song (not surprising though, given its length and dialogue segments). Many times the vocal selections score of a musical can be over-simplified or watered down, but it's clear that a lot of time and effort was spent putting together these arrangements to make them as authentic and true to the show as possible. Miranda's score is one of the best I have ever heard, and these arrangements have only increased my appreciation for it. A must-have for any ITH fan!

Rent: Vocal Selections (Essential Musicals) [Paperback] Review

The selections in this collection match the selections featured on the RENT - selections album. Unfortunately, this means that many of the best songs in the full score are cut out (including: Light my Candle, La Vie Boheme... I Should Tell You, etc.), because they involve sung dialogue rather than "liftable" songs (songs that work out of context). Another drawback is that in general, songs written for a rock band (featuring extensive guitar) do not transcribe well to solo piano (guitar chords are included in this book, though). With this in mind, however, there is still a lot of good things about this collection. Larson's great ballad-esque songs, like "I'll cover you," "Your eyes," "Without You," and "Seasons of Love" work very well as piano/vocal. Other, more rock-sounding songs such as "Rent," "Out tonight," and "What you own" are still doable. As written they may sound a little awkward, but people who have had experience playing rock piano may find that with a little fiddling with the written notes a decent version can be produced. Even if you don't have experience playing rock piano, if you have more experience playing other Broadway music you can still learn a lot from working with these songs and trying out different things. Other songs included are: "Take me or Leave me," "Another Day," "Halloween," and "Santa Fe." "Take me" didn't transcribe well (esp. the vocal line) due to the bluesy pitches of the song, but the main riff and the chords are accurate. "Another day" contains both the rock elements and the balladesque elements, but the rock elements do not require many changes."Halloween" transcribes faithfully and works well; "Santa Fe" is transcribed well, but since much of it is spoken it is also a little odd. Overall this book is well done. The songs are all faithful in spirit to the album, although at times a pitch is written differently from the orig. broadway cast recording. The song where this is most apparent is in "Seasons of Love" where it appears that the two soloists' lines were mostly improvised. Although I usually prefer for a song's accompaniment to reflect the actual full score, in the case of these songs such accompaniment is repetitive and adding the vocal line (which is actually a very standard practice for vocal selections) was very welcome. RENT has become a part of the modern musical theater canon, and so this book has become necessary for any Broadway-lover's sheet music collection.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Vocal Selections) [Paperback] Review

Vocal Scores for modern musicals aren't published because if they were, there'd be so many illegal productions of musicals. However, the vocal selections from scores are published. While these are nice, most of the time, several songs are omitted. However, thankfully, almost the entire score of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, one of the best 2005 musicals, is included. The piano arangements are similar to the orchestral parts and most harmonies are in the book.
I'm very pleased. Thank you Hal Leonard and David Yazbek.

This is one tremendous find! THe Gershwins wrote some very memorable tunes, and the piano arrangements (also includes vocals and guitar chords) are lush and exquisite! I have been looking for a book of Gershwin for piano awhile now and this is PERFECT! Lots of fun and pleasure, though it is not "EASY PIANO". Moderate ability is required, but you can always fake it by playing the chords and melody line. I love it!

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Piano/Vocal/Chords) [Paperback] Review

It's books like this that made me wish I had the natural talent for music, or had at least studied and practiced hard enough to develop talent. The motion picture score that Howard Shore composed for The Lord of the Rings trilogy is absolutely brilliant, and while nothing can match his magnificent orchestra, there is something unique and incredible about hearing the same music played on a simple piano -- coming from your very own fingers.
The front cover is one of the promotional posters (NOT the DVD cover as was the case with the other two piano books from the trilogy) showing Saruman from the back commanding his 10,000 Uruk-hai. If you look on the right, although it is geographically incorrect, you can see Edoras in Rohan in the distance. Inside the book are forty pages, eight of which are movie pictures. Once again, there are some gruesome orcs pictured inside, in case you have little hobbits around the house that might get scared.
The music includes:
- Gollum's Song, the end-credits song of the movie. Not very enjoyable to play, I'd say...it's a rather mournful and melancholy song.
- Evenstar, which is all-Elvish, but surprisingly doesn't provide the translation. Shouldn't be too hard to dig one up on the internet, however. The tune is pretty, the background for Aragorn's dream/vision of Arwen in The Two Towers.
- Isengard Unleashed, which begins as the soundtrack score does, with the lament for Haldir upon his untimely death in the battle for Helm's Deep. Then it moves on to the score for the Ents as they march to war. This is probably the longest in the book, maybe of all three books. Afterwards, they give the translation of the war song of the Ents.
- Breath of Life, the quiet but stirring tune/song that you hear when Aragorn lies wounded after a battle, and receives another vision/dream of Arwen that gives him a (let's all say it together now) "breath of life". Elvish lyrics, English translation at the end.
- Forth Eorlingas, my favorite one (at least to HEAR), the tune that shows the rousing of the remaining soldiers at Helm's Deep, their death plunge out the causeway, and Gandalf's near-biblical arrival to the rescue. The second-best in this book, in my opinion.
- Rohan, which was an absolutely necessary piece to include in this book. It's short, *almost* simple enough for a beginner like me to pick my way through, and beyond gorgeous. It begins with the noble theme for Éowyn, and peaks into the majestic score for the kingdom of Rohan. This one alone is worth getting the book for.
This book makes an excellent addition to your piano library, or an excellent gift for your musically-inclined hobbit-heads. Go for it.

Wicked - Vocal Selections [Paperback] Review

This version of the Wicked Songbook is the one that DOES NOT have the melody interpolated throughout the piano part-- it is meant as a "vocal line with piano accompaniment" version.It is described by Stephen Schwartz in his forward to the book as being "essentially a reduction of what is played by the show orchestra, edited so that it is playable by one person with two hands and ten fingers."
The songs have been adapted so that they may be sung out of the context of the show, with longer instrumental sections, chorus parts, and other such material being trimmed out in most cases.Though this gave me pause at first, I am learning that it really serves the material in this sense, making the music perfect for performing on its own, out of the story-driven context of the show.(Some cuts include the 'We Deserve Each Other' section of "Dancing Through Life", and the 'Who's that Mage...' counterpoint in "One Short Day")
All the favorite songs appear here, from "The Wizard and I", to "Dancing Through Life" and even an excerpt from "Thank Goodness" entitled "I Couldn't Be Happier".There have even been some small additions to the songs to make them work better for solo performance-- I love the new added verse in "No One Mourns the Wicked", for example.It makes for exciting rediscoveries of these already familiar pieces.
The arrangements are challenging, yes, and except for in one case all the songs appear in their original show keys (which means, e.g., that "Defying Gravity" is in Db, "One Short Day" is in F#, etc, but are well worth the effort-- both those songs sound amazing."For Good" has been taken down a half step and appears in the book in C major).For those trying to compare this book to the P/V/G (with melody) version, I would say there is NOT a huge difference in degree of difficulty between the two books.
The wonderful result of this effort is that the arrangements are SO true to the score.It's really encouraging that Hal Leonard is starting to let composers publish more accurate and exciting versions of their work, and that what we get in the vocal selections is not some cheap simplified thing that sounds nothing like the nuanced and complex score but instead is actually rich and fantastic and interesting.
These Vocal Selections are without a doubt some of the best I've seen produced.Huge congrats to Stephen Schwartz for getting out the music in such a way that the core of the score really is still intact and ensuring that the great songs from this show will be performed for a very long time.Just Amazing.

50 Easy Classical Guitar Solos [Paperback] Review

I am a rank beginner, having only purchased my first classical guitar 4 months ago. I use several method books in my daily practice (Noad, Parkening, et al), but the one I open the most is this excellent compilation by Jerry Willard. It is well organized, starting with easy pieces that get gradually more difficult. The book has both standard notation and tablature.

The first few pieces are easy enough for even an early beginner like myself to play (not like Mr. Willard, of course, who plays all the songs beautifully, but well enough to keep me interested and keen to practice). The songs are simple but very attractive, and I find myself actually listening to the accompanying CD a lot, at work or in the car.

The only reason for not giving this 5 stars: I would have preferred a spiral binding - it is not that easy to keep the book open, and after a few months of daily use I am getting worried about pages starting to become loose. Not a big deal at all, though. If you are a beginning or early intermediate classical guitarist, this book will definitely not disappoint you.

The 43 songs in this book cover Leonard Cohen's work up through 1988, with his I'm Your Man album being the last one represented.While the 1969 book Songs of Leonard Cohen contained an essay and many photographs with vocal lines and guitar tablature from his first two albums, there are no photographs or extras in this collection.

This book presents vocal lines, guitar chords, and a grand staff for piano arrangements.The typography and layout are excellent, though the piano arrangements cause a number of songs to be run out for six, eight or ten pages.The 43 songs included represent a good cross-section of Cohen's most prolific period of songwriting.

O'Neill's Music of Ireland: Over 1,000 Fiddle Tunes [Paperback] Review

The problem isn't only that a lot of tunes have been left out that were in the original edition offered by Daniel Collins. But Krassen has altered many tunes so that instead of presenting piping versions -- which the original offered -- we now have simplified fiddle-friendly versions. Many pipe ornaments have been lost. Krassen has lost much of the magic.
O'Neill was a piper and many of the versions of tunes he saved came from pipers. This is also true of the earlier collections of tunes from which O'Neill drew for many of his tunes, such as Ryan's Mammoth Collection. In Krassen's version a lot of the classical, 19th. Century pipery flavor has been sacrificed for "cleaner,"presumably "modern" versions. This is the last edition of O'Neill's one should consider buying. I play fiddle, flute, and concertina, I've lived in Ireland for years, and have been playing Irish traditional music for over thirty years. I know this sounds terribly opinionated. But even if you play fiddle and learn from the dots you should use a tune-book closer to the source than this. Get the big yellow Collin's edition or the slim white-covered "condensed" O'Neill's collection. You'll be happier in the long run.
