Freddie Hubbard: Trumpet (Transcribed) [Paperback] Review

Freddie Hubbard: Trumpet [Paperback]quality - notes are easy to read and the cover is good quality

accuracy - not checked for typo's and this is rather tedious to do

limitations - the round sound, phrasing, slurs, vibratto, etc can not be notationally recorded; also the solos vary from one recording to another, so the music cannot be used to follow his playing unless checked against the specific recording

usefulness - great for trumpet players who can test their ears

bonus - each song indicates bflat trumpet or flugelhorn (usually also a bflat instrument)

bottom line - a great book to evaluate freddie's methods and view the organization of his ideas

David Bennett Cohen Teaches Blues Piano, Vol. 2 [Paperback] Review

David Bennett Cohen Teaches Blues Piano, Vol. 2 [Paperback]Over the past two years, I have laid hands on just about every "learn piano blues" book I have been able to track down. Some helped me a lot, others less so.Some were fine for an outright beginner, others needed you to be a fully trained musician to make any sense of them.
Daniel Cohen's book is based on an assumption that you know musical notation as far as you would learn it in the first few months of normal piano lessons.Apart from that, he starts at square one.
Daniel Cohen's book includes a CD.Even if you read music 100%, the inclusion of a CD is important.Blues rhythms are only approximated by musical notation, so you need to be able to *hear* them if you are going to play them right.
He starts from ground level - the is no assumption that you already know the chords for a 12-bar blues.Step-by-step exercises quickly get you playing simple but satisfyingly authentic sounding blues patterns.
Then he shows you a number of simple building blocks that can be put together to make your own blues solos. He goes on to cover turnarounds and endings - more blues building blocks.
The way Daniel Cohen presents his material all hangs together - for example he gives a demonstration of how the blues scale of the root note sounds fine when played over the three main chordsof a blues tune.As soon as you have heard this and learned the notes of the scale, you will be picking out your own blues solo patterns.
One of the nice aspects is how Daniel Cohen's enthusiasm for the music comes across and how he gets you to avoid hangups that might otherwise inhibit your blues progress.
Obviously, one 24-page book (and its 54-track CD) won't cover everything. But if you work through each of the exercises, it will get you off to a very good start on your way to playing blues piano. And you will be on the way to REALLY playing the blues - not just being able to trot out two or three songs with no further way forward.
"Daniel Bennett Cohen Teaches Blues Piano" gets my wholehearted recommendation, with no reservations at all.

Product Description:
Professional Piano Teaching, is designed to serve as a basic text for a first-semester piano pedagogy course. It provides an introduction to the profession, an overview of learning principles, a thorough approach to all aspects of teaching beginners and elementary students, and a detailed analysis of the business aspects of independent teaching.Special topics related to group teaching, teaching preschool students and evaluation of teaching also are included. Its thorough treatment of subject matter makes it useful for pedagogy students, new teachers, university graduates with little or no pedagogy coursework, and teachers who have had limited opportunity for advanced training.Due to its comprehensive approach, experienced teachers will also find it filled with helpful hints to enhance their skills.
The book deals not only with what to teach, but with how to teach and solve problems in teaching.Teachers will be able to apply the principles that are discussed to real situations that they encounter on a daily basis.Actual teaching problems are discussed and workable solutions are offered for them.Numerous musical examples are used to illustrate the discussions. For copyright reasons, most musical examples were chosen from materials published or distributed by Alfred Publishing Company.Because bibliographies quickly become outdated and new teaching materials appear with regularity, specific lists of materials are limited. In addition, computer and keyboard technology has not been treated as a separate chapter in the book.Because of the rapidly changing technology, general applications are suggested throughout the text as appropriate.
For the beginning pedagogy class, it is recommended that students study Chapters 1-8 in order.By following this order, they explore the field in a systematic way, learning:
‚ what it means to become a professional piano teacher (Chapter 1)
‚ principles of learning applied to piano teaching (Chapter 2)
‚ how to choose a beginning piano method (Chapter 3)
‚ elementary teaching concepts and common problems of beginners (Chapter 4)
‚ specifics of teaching rhythm and reading (Chapter 5)
‚ specifics of teaching technique and musical sound development (Chapter 6)
‚ how to choose repertoire and present it (Chapter 7)
‚ how to develop musicality in students (Chapter 8)
The special topics in the book can be integrated into the class according to the preference of the teacher, the length of the term and the needs of the student. These topics include:
‚ an exploration of group teaching (Chapter 9)
‚ a philosophical and practical discussion about teaching preschoolers (Chapter 10)
‚ the business aspects of teaching piano (Chapter 11)
‚ suggestions for observing and evaluating lessons (Chapter 12)
In Chapter 11 (Business Aspects of Teaching), samples of professional forms, studio policies, brochures, business cards and ads are given. The publisher hereby grants the purchaser of this book permission to use and adapt these forms for personal and professional purposes.
Chapter 12 (Evaluation of Teaching) should be studied as soon as pedagogy students start to observe experienced teachers and begin their own student teaching.
Important points covered in each chapter are summarized at the end of the chapter. These summary points can be used in the pedagogy classroom for starting classroom discussions of key topics. In addition, projects that build on the teaching principles introduced in the chapter are suggested for both new teachers and experienced teachers.Pedagogy teachers can assign or adapt those projects that are appropriate for students in their classes.
The quest for improvement of piano teaching skills never ends.Whether you are beginning the journey as a new teacher with this book or whether you are an experienced teacher refining your skills, the author wishes you continued success as you pursue your career in professional piano teaching.

The Fingerpicking Blues of John Jackson Review

The Fingerpicking Blues of John JacksonThis is an excellent instructional dvd with stories about Mr. Jackson's life. For anyone but an advanced guitar player, the material that is slowed down and zoomed-in on is too difficult to pick up, save "Louis Collins"; this particular tune can, indeed, serve as an introduction to Blues fingerpicking. Jackson messes up, leaves out or mumbles lyrics on many occasions, but this is acceptable due to his great stories about John Hurt, Skip James and Mance Lipscomb, whom he refers to as "Nance Lister". John comes across as a very cordial man who is capable of playing in the styles of Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller (though with a different type of guitar than Fuller played), and Josh White. I look forward to picking up the new Jackson dvd from guitarvideos.com, and recommend "The Fingerpicking Blues of John Jackson" to everyone.

Product Description:
This video is a must-have for all guitarists who want a lesson with a traditional blues artist. The Piedmont style comes alive as John Jackson teaches songs from his wide repertoire, detailing the finer points of his fingerstyle technique and reminiscing about Mississippi John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb, Son House and other classic blues guitarists who influenced his music. As a child, John Jackson picked up his father's guitar and taught himself to play by listening to 78 rpm records and watching the legendary blues artists who passed through his home town in Rappahannock County, VA.
Roy Book Binder observes that there appear to be "four or five distinct John Jackson styles," and you'll get a taste of each one on this video, from "Little Brown Jug" (the very first piece John learned on guitar) to Mississippi John Hurt's classic "Candy Man." "West Coast Blues" and John Hurt's "Louis Collins" will benefit those just getting into the fingerpicking style, while Blind Blake's "Police Dog Blues" makes use of more advanced blues technique.
The songs on this tape become a showcase for turnarounds, runs up and down the neck, use of the slide, and John's two-finger picking style, including his unique way of producing bass runs. You'll learn to play his original "Boat's Up The River" and "Bear Cat Mama;" Blind Boy Fuller's "Little Woman So Sweet," "Red River Blues" and "Key To The Highway;" and the classic "John Henry." John gives a full performance of each song, then plays it slowly, analyzing the more difficult sections.

Iolanthe, or the Peer & the Peri: Vocal Score with Dialogue [Paperback] Review

Iolanthe, or the Peer & the Peri: Vocal Score with Dialogue [Paperback]Few opera/operetta librettos read very well on their own (of course, they weren't intended to).In the case of Gilbert and Sullivan, the exercise is not only sheer pleasure, but almost a necessity; such is the speed of the monologues and intricacy of the ensembles that much of Gilbert's brilliant verbal wit gets lost.
'Iolanthe' is one of his most enrapturing confections, the story of a shepherd, Strephon, half-fairy half-mortal, whose mother, Iolanthe, is a disgraced sprite (it is forbidden for fairies to marry mortals), and whose father (unbeknownst to either) is the Lord Chancellor who won't let him marry his ward, Phyllis, darling of the Lords.
The material may be fantastic, the setting pastoral, but the satire in this 1882 work is spot-on contemporary, with jibes at the Irish problem, the uselessness of the House of Lords (who as a caste are as close to fantasy as the fairies, so it is no surprise they exchange the House of Peers for the House of Peris), and the ruling class' fear of democracy and universal suffrage.A most delightful fancy has the fairies take over Parliament in the shape of Strephon, whose every whim unites the notoriously factional Liberal and Conservative in his favour.
this is Gilbert at his funniest - the verbal contortions he undergoes in the search for rhymes break all linguistic boundaries, and his view of the fragility of centuries-old English institutions prescient. There is an extraordinary patter song by the Lord Chancellor which shows the man embodying Law and Constitution plunging into nightmare, the culmination of a libretto in which identities and forms, as well as seemingly irrevocable laws and customs, are repeatedly broken down or metamorphosed.
