Fussell Exercises for Ensemble Drill [Paperback] Review

Fussell Exercises for Ensemble Drill [Paperback]The Fussell book is used in my high school band quite often for scale work. We use it mostly for practicing the circle of fifths, their relative minors, and the 7 different modes. Though it can be awefully boring to play scales this book is truely amazing to raise your skill as a musician. It contains treble and bass cleff, and has the 12 main scales and their minors, fifths, thirds, intervals, eighths, and much more. I recommend it to any serious musician that wants to increase their skill at any instrument.

Integrales: Study Score [Paperback] Review

Integrales: Study Score [Paperback]Two Piccolos, Oboe, Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet, Horn, Trumpet in d, Trumpet in C, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Contrabass Trombone, 4 Percussion, Suspended Cymbal, Snare Drum, Tenor Drum, Castanets, Sleighbells, Chains, Tambourine, Low Tam Tam, Bass Drum, Slap Stick, you really feel this piece, the physicality of it like a steel girder,I always think of Richard Serra, but there is spirituality there, private, whereas in Varese there is an element of assault, like a siren, or a jack-air hammer, or simply the convolutions of traffic; For its relative small ensemble constitution of instruments there is something grandiose, perhaps a leftover from Varese, his early years; the work has considerable power, the tension many times results from the opening of spaces, and the focus on solo passages, like metal threads,doll-rods that holds the bridge together, against these solos, sustained percussion gong, tam-tam almost imperceptible timbres can be introduced as a premonition to the full bodied ensemble entering, The three trombones as well give, and lend more a clarity, and the fact that there is no Tuba(Contrabass Trombone instead) adds to the clarity. A Tuba, as glorious as it sounds would have functioned to blend/smear more the sonorities, more overtones rpresented per square acoustic footage (here the Contra Bass Trombone sticks out more, has more an edge)also there is not a bevy of snarling, nasty horns, only one with superimposed on whatever the trombones iterate, usually chordal declamations, The two piccolos well serve to "light-up" the work with a stridentcy, piercing moments; they really do not mix,or blend with anything else as the trombones merely claiming a timbral territory, perhaps they are close to the trumpet in D, smaller piccolo trumpet. The soloshelp contribute to the tension;like something has fallen out of the work, an open space, and in open sapces you can then see or hear lines more clearly, that when the rest of the ensemble enters; the percussion here punctuates whatever the winds do,but they do have a mystery, almost like DiChirico, someone also fascinated by modernities new found language and spaces; same identical rhythms are played much of the time, like this is an etude in how to sustain a timbre, disrupt it,subvert it twist it into other shapes then a dense chord, and slowly take away from it, the reiterations of the sustain timbre as well is what makes the work cohere toward conclusion.

Banjo Pickers Fake Book [Plastic Comb] Review

Banjo Pickers Fake Book [Plastic Comb]This book is 216 pages of banjo tunes arranged for three-finger and clawhammer players. It includes a cross-reference of alternate titles and a 24 page general discography, as well as a discussion of the types of tunesincluded. There is also a short discussion of technical topics such asmodes (very appropriate for traditional music) and how to readtablature.
This book is a lot like a Grainger's collection of fiddletunes for flatpickers.Unlike Grainger's, which only provides enoughtablature to spell out the melody for the A part and the B part, The BanjoPicker's Fakebook takes you through one whole iteration of each tunecomplete with first and second endings. Also like Grainger's, this is notan instruction book.It leaves both the right and left hand fingeringsentirely up to the reader. For example, if you are a strictly a bluegrassplayer, the clawhammer arrangements will not be useful to you.
Although the discography could be used to collect aural examples of thetunes, a CD or a set of tapes would have been a welcome addition.Music isan aural art, and it is impossible to convey the full musical sense intablature or in standard musical notation alone.
If you are looking for alot of tunes, thoughtfully arranged in a single volume, I highly recommendThe Banjo Picker's Fakebook. If the tune can't be found in this book, chances are no one eles knows it either, so you could go ahead and playanything that fit.

Finale PrintMusic 2009 Review

Finale PrintMusic 2009Late last year, I bought Finale SongWriter 2007, thinking that the fifty-dollar software would be enough for me to compose music for my cartoons. However, after nearly a year of not being satisfied by its limitations, I finally paid an extra $50 for an upgrade to Finale PrintMusic 2009, and I do not regret it. For one thing, SongWriter is limited to how many staves of music you can put in it, and PrintMusic doesn't seem to have that limitation. It can also do grace notes, and other things that SongWriter couldn't. I originally sought out to buy PrintMusic anyway, but I thought it would be a bargain to buy the other program instead. Better late than never, I guess.
